Back Country Camping

June 16th, 2009

Tamara and I went camping in the Wichita Mountains this past weekend with our friend Randy and Amy. I, as well as Randy, had always wanted to go on a backpacking camping trip. I believe I went on one when I was younger, but I’m not too sure. We reserved our permits a couple months ago. They only allow ten people per weekend to enter the back country camping area and we got four of the slots.

A good chunk of money for supplies and an hour drive or so later and we’re ready to start camping. Sixty pound packs and all. I way under etimated the difficulty of carrying a 60lb pack in nearly 100° weather. So we made it about a quarter mile. Setup camp and cooled off as best we could. Ate dinner. We got some of those dried dinners you just have to add boiling water too. I was very impressed. Did some night photography. Howled at the surrounding coyotes. I think we heard some puppies. Slept on lumpy ground. Got dewed on. Awake.

Awesome Sunrise. We heard elk grunts in the night. Elk grunts and primate snores. Ended up with about 30 or so chigger bites. Randy and I went on about a three and a half hour hike/climb. Good times. As the day went on and it became hotter. We decided to grab a hotel in lawton. Got to eat at red lobster and swim in a pool. It was a nice weekend.

Monday comes. My forehead broke out. My chigger bites are oozing pusy blisters. I have a cold sore and a heat rash. Camping kicked my ass. Would i do it again. FUCK YEAH! (but with a smaller pack).
